REPORT: Leiston 2-3 Quorn
The Reds maintained their 100% record away from home with a deserved 3-2 win at Victory Road. Ben Fowkes opened the scoring for the hosts, against the run of play, but Zak Goodson drew Quorn level ten minutes later and Deen Master’s thunderbolt gave the Methodists a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Simeon Cobourne scored a brilliant third after the break and Ryan Beswick’s side hung on for the win despite a Spencer Keller consolation in stoppage time.
Quorn could have been 2-0 up inside the opening ten minutes. A Goodson corner almost crept inside the near post but the Assistant Referee ruled that Marcus Mehew stopped the ball before it crossed the line. Moments later the Reds were denied a penalty when Referee Ashley Tyne ruled that Eddie Jackson hit the ball with his upper arm to help scramble a corner clear.
A superb bit of skill saw Leiston take the lead when Fowkes powerful shot across goal found the bottom corner after Joao Soares Rangel had set him up with some individual brilliance. The Reds didn’t trail for long as Goodson found the bottom corner with his third goal direct from a free kick in the past two matches.
Master then scored the pick of three superb strikes with an unstoppable rocket from outside the area. The full back scored his second of the season, driving high into the roof of the net from 25 yards. Quorn had numerous chances to add to the lead and put the match out of reach before the break, but Mehew made a couple of saves and the Reds were guilty of wasting chances.
Cobourne hit the third soon after the restart. Goodson’s lofted through ball saw the striker blaze past his defender and bare down on goal, stroking past Mehew for his third in two games. Again, the Reds created numerous chances, but couldn’t finish the game off decisively, allowing the Blues to hang around, without looking to threatened.
Leiston would add a scrappy goal in stoppage time as Keller was able to force home a loose ball in the Quorn penalty area, but the Reds comfortably saw the match out, moving up to second in the table and setting up a mouth-watering clash at first-placed Harborough Town on Tuesday.
