PREVIEW: Leiston (A)
By Dan Sheward
League action returns as Quorn face Leiston away from home this Saturday for a 3pm kick off
After a spectacular 8-0 win at home to Sherwood Colliery in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, the Reds switch their focus back to the league. Sat in fouth place, Ryan Beswick will expect a strong response from his sides last league game where they were defeated 1-0 at home to Barwell.
Zak Goodson took home the match ball against Colliery after securing a superb hattrick. A similar performance from the winger this weekend would hopefully give the side a solid footing to build off.
The Opposition:
Saturday’s opposition Leiston, currently sit eighth in the league table. Having only lost one of their opening five games, they’ll be a tough test for Beswick’s team. The blues’ last game in the league saw them pick up all three points against Needham Market.
Taking the lead early thanks to a goal from Ronnie Blois, meant Leiston had a dream start to the game. However, Needham were able to draw things level in the 35th minute, making it one a piece at half time. Joe McNeil was the hero for Chris Wiggers’ team. The substitute put his team in the lead through a scissor kick on the end of Adam Mills’ cross. The blues now sit on 8pts from 5 games, 2pts behind Quorn’s tally.
Leiston also progressed into the second qualifying round of the FA Cup this past weekend. Winning 2-1 away from home against Cheshunt means they will host Hackney Wick in the next round. A busy few weeks also saw the Blues progress in the Suffolk Premier Cup, beating Lowestoft Town 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw on Tuesday evening.
Last Game:
Quorn’s last game, in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup was nothing short of a fantastic performance. Man of the Match Goodson contributed three of the eight goals on the day, two of which coming from direct free kicks. The other players who managed to get on the score sheet were Cain Noble, Jordan Clarke, Silvio Bello and a brace from Simeon Cobourne. It was a fairly quiet afternoon for Tom Allsopp who started the game in goal, but it was young Hari Corbett who finished the game between the sticks, getting some valuable minutes under his belt.
Announced just before the game, new signing Marvellous Onabirekhanlen was named on the bench. The new attacker came on for the final 30 minutes of the match. Marvellous brings important high level attacking experience to the side that will no doubt help the squad this season.
Head-to-Head:
Quorn and Leiston meet for the first time this weekend at Victory Road. The Reds will be hoping to ride the momentum of their brilliant win in the FA Cup last weekend as well as continuing their unbelievable away form. The current streak see them unbeaten in the league on their travels in the past 17 months, making a 100% start on the road in step three. It will be an exciting clash as both sides currently sit in the top half of the table, with only two points separating the two.
