REPORT: St. Ives Town 1-4 Quorn
By James Kendrick
A dominant second half away performance from Quorn helped them to a 4-1 win at St Ives.
Despite going a goal behind with just nine minutes of the first half to go, The Methodists battled back to go in at half time level, before blowing the hosts away in the second half.
The result lifts Quorn back up to fourth in the Southern Premier Central while St Ives look nervously over their shoulder at the relegation zone.
Just before kick off, Quorn announced the signing of Jack Duffy from Stamford AFC and he made his debut from the start as he partnered Simeon Cobourne up front.
But it was the hosts who started the better of the two sides as they put Quorn under some early pressure and looked to control the momentum.
And they got their moment 9 minutes before the break when the referee judged that Cain Noble handled the ball in the box. Dan Lawlor stepped up to take the resulting penalty and beat Adam Harrison to give his side the lead.
Going a goal behind seemed to wake the visitors up a bit and it took just three minutes for them to be back level when Simeon Cobourne punished a defensive effort by nicking the ball and finishing well to send the teams in level at the break.
After last Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Halesowen Town, it was vital that Quorn got a good result in this game if they wanted to keep up their push for the playoffs and they showed their quality by dominating the second half from start to finish.
St Ives struggled to get out of their own half for large parts of the second half and struggled to mount any serious attacks on the Quorn goal.
But despite all their dominance, it took until the 70th minute for Quorn to go in front and it was thanks to a bit of brilliance from Finn O’Boyle who beat his defender on the byline and drove towards goal before delivering a delicate chip over the goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later Zak Goodson made it 3-1 when a quick counter attack saw him set free and he beat the keeper to score his 18th goal of the season in all competitions.
And deep into injury time, substitute Deen Master rounded off the win when he was the first to react to a rebound from a Zhani Burgess shot and Master buried the rebound to score his second goal in two games.
The result was a much needed bounce back for Quorn after the disappointment of last weekend and will give them some much needed confidence as they head into a long away trip at Bury Town on Tuesday night.
