REPORT: Quorn 2-4 Worcester City

By Will Phillips

An amazing run of form from Quorn that saw them win four league games in succession came to an end in the final game before Christmas. It was a hard-fought performance from Ryan Beswick’s side but unfortunately good attacking play and pressing proved too much for the Methodists on this occasion.

Quorn defended the DPD stand in the first half. The early stages of the match was end to end, with both sides creating half chances, unable to make any serious chances come to a head. This included a line breaking pass from Silvio Bello into the box that unfortunately no one was able to latch onto.

Bello also put in an impressive defensive performance in these opening minutes blocking a shot from the Worcester attack. It was clear that Worcester’s press was hard for the Reds to handle, forcing them to play more long balls than usual.

Midfielder Felix Miles managed to win the ball in midfield for City. He then played it through to top scorer Dan Sweeny, who finished the move with a powerful drive to make it 1-0 to the away side.

Worcester continued to dominate the ball even having a goal disallowed for offside. Quorn’s first shot on target came shortly after, with a move from Zak Goodson. The forward was able to find space in the box but shot the ball into the keepers arms.

Beswick was the creator for Quorn’s next best chance, putting in a free kick from near the corner flag. Despite the quality of the cross, no Quorn player was able to get onto the end of the set piece.

Goodson’s hard work paid off eventually though, as he was able to get the ball in the box and execute a fine finish in the closing minutes of the first half to make the game 1-1. Quorn went in a half time disappointed with how things had gone but grateful to be level thanks to some good individual quality.

Changes were made at half time to Quorn’s eleven, Reece Fyfe Cain Noble and Finn O’Boyle came on for Zhani Burgess, Billy Kee and Jasper Tetlow, showing Quorn’s intent to get back on the front foot.

These changes along with some other tactical tweaks worked initially as the Reds seemed more composed than they did in the previous half. The added composure from Quorn caused Worcester to take more shots from distance, none however were able to worry Adam Harrison.

Worcester’s drive eventually paid off however, as a highly impressive volley from the edge of the box from Harry Burns put the Blues back on top 1-2. The Reds showed great fight though, immediately firing back. Cobourne did brilliantly in the box to find space before laying it off to O’Boyle to finish the move with a powerful shot at goal, parity restored 2-2.

The Methodists were able to seize on momentum and looked to control the game more, however Worcester were still threatening at times and Quorn were found out again. Charlie Lutz put the Faithful ahead again for the third time in the match, from a well worked cross he hit a powerful strike to make it 2-3 to the visitors.

Quorn had another chance from another Ryan Beswick free kick but again no one was able to get a clean connection with the ball. The last goal of the game sealed the points for the Blues as Felix Miles, architect of the first goal, scored from a cut back in the box to make it 2-4.

Quorn were unable to do anything in the closing stages, leading to a defeat in the final match before Christmas. Despite moments of individual quality and periods of control, it was clear the Methodists could not keep up with an inspired display from Worcester City on this occasion.
