REPORT: Quorn 2-0 Stamford

By Dan Sheward

Quorn bounced back from the weekend disappointment against Alvechurch as first half goals from Jacob Fenton and Silvio Bello saw the Reds beat Stamford 2-0 on a wintry evening at Farley Way.

Gus Sanches entered the starting eleven making his first start as Ryan Beswick looked to get his team back on track.

It set up to be a cagey game with light snow falling at the Stotto. Jacob Fenton looked lively as his early run in behind almost provided Quorn with a good opportunity to take a rapid lead.

A string of offsides for Quorn showed clear attacking intent to get in behind the back line of Stamford, doing just that in the 8th minute of the game. A darting run from number 9 Jacob Fenton, saw him get on the end of a brilliant ball and portray immaculate composure, as the striker slotted the ball into the bottom corner, earning his team an early lead.

With Quorn taking control there was no sign of letting up. Picking up the ball in the middle of the park Zak Goodson came close to doubling the lead. A series of fake shots took two defenders out the game but unfortunately, his drilled shot across goal zipped just wide.

It was dominance in the opening 20, Jacob Fenton eager to further extend his goal tally with a whipped shot rising just over the Stamford goal.

Stamford captain Alex Collard was the first to enter the book for a foul on Reece Fyfe right in front of the home bench. Safe to say there was a bit more than a shout from the Reds.

A foul on Leon Lobjoit set up a dangerous free kick for the visitors on the left-hand side of the box. Opting for a cross, Wilsons ball was met by centre half Jordan Cooke who’s flying leg didn’t do enough to steer the ball goalward.

With Quorn after that second goal, Silvio Bello stepped up and did not disappoint. Fenton’s ball found Bello flying down the right wing and a quick touch inside allowed him to superbly whip the ball in to the far-left corner. An excellent and well-deserved goal for Ryan Beswick’s men.

Efforts from Sanches and Beswick almost granted the home team their third. The score 2-0 but could have been much higher one.

The second half closed with Quorn ahead and the far superior side. Fenton, Sanches and Goodson had been electric all evening and I’m sure the blue shirts were happy to see half time as Quorn looked dangerous on the attack.

It was no different from Quorn coming out in the second half, a header flashing wide and a tidy effort from Gus Sanches were close to making it three, almost straight after the break.

It was a dominant performance from Quorn, and it felt inevitable that a third goal was soon approaching. A number of chances came close for the reds with the best being from Gus Sanches who found the end of a lofted ball over the top of the Stamford defence but couldn’t quite convert the opportunity.

Sanches made way for Cain Noble moments later. A busy evening for the number 10 and a performance to be happy with, getting himself an assist on his first start.

It was a fairly quiet evening in the snow for Adam Harrison as he had little real threat that tested him throughout the game. His back four did a splendid job of keeping the visitors at bay.

Jacob Fenton left the pitch for Zhani Burgess and there’s no doubt he will be pleased with his finish this evening, but he may have hoped for a couple more.

Chances kept flowing for the home side yet the failure to find the third goal was an ever-growing frustration within the Stotto. A neat run from Finn O’Boyle presented a brilliant chance to seal the game but once again the ball couldn’t find the back of the net.

Soon after, Finn O’Boyle was replaced by Dennis Digie as Quorn looked to see the closing minutes of the game out.

It was a splendid display from Quorn in a competitive game and credit to the opposition who kept pushing throughout and never showed any sign of giving in. The Reds will have left the pitch happy with the three points, however wondering how they didn’t add another two or three to their tally.

Focus turns to Saturday as Beswick’s team travel to face 13th place Bury Town. After a positive performance there will be a confident feeling heading into the game that the team can get the job done and add another three points to this seasons tally.
