REPORT: Quorn 2-0 Banbury United

By Dan Sheward

Quorn produced a disciplined performance at home to secure a 2–0 victory over Banbury United, with goals from Cain Noble and Jack Duffy sealing all three points.

Finn O’Boyle returned to the matchday squad for the Reds, while Zak Goodson missed out through suspension.

The opening ten minutes were evenly matched, although the visitors looked to test Quorn early with a series of long throws that in the end caused no trouble for the home defence. Banbury continued to apply pressure in the early stages but struggled to form anything more than half-chances.

The biggest scare arrived when Banbury’s number eight Alex Prosser struck the crossbar directly from a corner, briefly alarming goalkeeper Adam Harrison.

Despite the early pressure, it was Quorn who struck first. A cross from the right found Cain Noble arriving at the back post, and his lofted header looped over the goalkeeper and into the net to give the Reds a 1–0 lead.

Banbury responded quite well and remained applying pressure. Ryan Beswick had a chance from a dangerous free kick position but saw his effort strike the wall as Quorn continued to soak up the Banbury attacks.

A swift counterattack nearly brought a second goal when Simeone Cobourne broke forward, but his final pass was cut out at the crucial moment.

Adam Harrison was called into action soon after, producing an excellent save to deny Banbury’s Connor Ferguson following a neat move down the right. Moments later, the Quorn keeper was at it again, making another impressive stop to keep out a close-range effort from the visitors.

Quorn held firm until the break, with Sam Warburton making a vital block just before half-time to keep his team in the lead.

Half time

Banbury began the second half brightly and created an early opportunity through Keegan Bloom, whose curling effort drifted over the crossbar.

However, Quorn doubled their advantage despite not being at their best. Silvio Bellos saw his initial shot saved, but Jack Duffy reacted quickest to tap home the rebound and make it 2–0.

Inspired by the second goal, the Reds pushed forward again, with Ryan Beswick going close to adding a third before his effort was well saved.

Banbury introduced a double substitution as they searched for a route back into the game. Drew Lowe was shown a yellow card for Quorn, while Alex Prosser was also booked after fouling Ryan Beswick. The resulting free kick from the left looked promising but was eventually headed clear.

Cobourne almost wrapped up the victory with a flicked header that zipped narrowly wide as Quorn began to take control of the game.

Late changes saw Finn O’Boyle return to the pitch in place of Drew Lowe, while Zhani Burgess replaced Finn Flanagan.

Adam Harrison was required once again later on, producing another good save to deny Banbury’s Peter Abimbola as the game approached its conclusion.

Gus Sanches was introduced for Cobourne with five minutes remaining, before a minimum of five minutes of added time were signalled.

Quorn managed the closing stages well to see out the game and secure a deserved victory.

Full-time: Quorn 2–0 Banbury

A solid and disciplined display from the Reds ensured they claimed all three points as they continue to push and secure a play-off spot come the end of the season.
