REPORT: Quorn 0-3 Spalding United

Quorn put in a battling performance against higher level opposition as they took on National League North Spalding United at Farley Way but ultimately fell to a 3-0 defeat.

After a disappointing result at the weekend, it was vital that Quorn showed a more competitive, battling effort and on the whole they did just that.

The National League North side did take the lead in the opening couple of minutes through Sembie-Ferris but other than that, the first half played out with a high intensity and a competitive spirit from both sides.

The Methodists did manage to get into some good positions but didn’t test the keeper as much as they would have liked. After getting his first goal for the club on Saturday, Tim Berridge had another opportunity to score but it was straight at the keeper.

Madou Cisse also got played in behind and managed to get a shot away but his effort was dragged wide.

Just before the break, there was a contentious issue as Quorn believed they should have had a penalty for handball. Zak Goodson in particular was adamant the ball had hit an arm but the officials didn’t agree.

In his post-match interview, Quorn manager Ryan Beswick explained that too many of his players are currently having to play 90 minutes due to him not quite having the numbers he would like at this stage of pre-season.

And as the second half wore on, this became apparent as Spalding were able to bring on some high-quality additions off the bench while Quorn tired.

Six minutes before the end, Spalding managed to double their lead through Fowkes. The trialist goalkeeper for Quorn managed to make a great save to keep the first shot out but the rebound fell to Fowkes who converted nicely.

And with the last kick of the game, Spalding put the icing on the cake from their perspective. Fowkes got his second of the game with a back heel that found the net and made it 3-0.
