REPORT: Ilkeston Town 0-2 Quorn

Quorn won their first game of the season with an excellent 2-0 win away at Ilkeston Town.

Two second half goals from Jayden-Samuel Lawrence-Lowther earned Quorn all three points and will give everyone at the club a much needed lift.

The result keeps Quorn in touch with the teams around them with them only remaining in the bottom four on goal difference.

Both sides came into the game needed a reaction. Quorn had lost 6-3 at home to Whitby Town while Ilkeston had lost 7-0 at Bury just 48 hours previously.

And it was an open game from the start. Ilkeston started well and had a couple of chances in the opening stages but didn’t really test Jake Laban in the Quorn goal.

Quorn could have been forgiven for thinking it was going to be one of those days again, especially striker Jayden-Samuel Lawrence-Lowther who had four golden chances to score in the first half but couldn’t quite convert in part thanks to a wonderful diving save by the Ilkeston goalkeeper.

There were also opportunities for Tim Berridge and for Luke Shaw who was making his first start in a Quorn shirt.

The Methodists may have thought they would be made to pay for those missed opportunities but they managed the second half really well and came away deserved winners.

The first goal came just five minutes into the second half as Jayden-Samuel fired a shot past the Ilkeston goalkeeper to give his side.

Going behind meant Ilkeston had to push forward more and really go for it, and they made all five substitutions quite quickly after going behind as they looked to respond.

But the more they pushed forward, the more space there was for Quorn to try and hit them on the counter-attack.

Things could have got better for Quorn when Tim Berridge successfully spun his man on the half way line and was through on goal but his shot went just wide.

It didn’t matter though as with 15 minutes to go, Jayden-Samuel found himself in the right place at the right time in the box to score a second and secure all three points for his team.

Ilkeston pushed had to get back into the game but they never really looked like scoring in truth and the relief and celebration at full time was palpable among everyone associated with Quorn.

It now sets up Friday night’s FA Cup game with Shepshed nicely as both sides will look to win their local derby and get through to the next round.
