REPORT: Bury Town 4-4 Quorn
A 24 minute Zak Goodson hat-trick rescued a point for the Reds as they fought back from 4-1 down to snatch a draw at Ram Meadow. Simeon Cobourne’s first half strike had kept Quorn in the match after the hosts had dominated the first 45 minutes. Jamie McGrath had a hat-trick of his own for the Blues, Oliver Canfer adding a fourth as Bury looked dominant for the first hour, but the Methodists threw everything at Town to take a share of the spoils.
Despite dominating play and delivering some excellent crosses into the box early on, it took Bury 30 minutes to open the scoring, a stunning move that saw McGrath get his head to a perfect ball in from the left.
The Reds responded quickly as Rhys Kelly strode into midfield and played a ball to the feet of Gus Sanches, who turned his man and raced off down the left touchline, cutting inside, teeing up Cobourne for the equaliser.
Ryan Beswick responded to Bury’s first half dominance with a change of shape, but the move initially backfired, with McGrath adding another two headed goals, either sided of Canfer’s own headed effort, to see Town rush into a 4-1 lead on the hour mark. Even the most ardent Quorn fan would be hard-pushed to say that Bury didn’t deserve the scoreline, having been the dominant force to that point.
With more substitutions forced upon Beswick his rejigged line-up grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck, launching the most unlikely of come backs. Goodson, who was on the end of some rough treatment throughout the evening, was once again brought down, this time on the edge of the box. Dusting himself down, the free-scoring forward curled a perfectly placed free kick past a despairing Ryan Dunne in the Bury goal to give Quorn a glimmer of hope.
It was Goodson again who was fouled, this time inside the area, just seven minutes later, again picking himself up to send Dunne the wrong way from the penalty spot, bringing the Reds roaring back into the match with 15 minutes to play. Dunne did manage to get the better of Goodson a couple of times, making superb stops to keep out another couple of strikes, before a Kelly long throw found it’s way to an unmarked Goodson to shoot through a crowd in the 92nd minute.
Credit to both sides for looking for a winner in the remaining stoppage time, but the game ended in a scintillating 4-4 draw that the small band of travelling supporters won’t soon forget. Next up for Quorn is a six pointer, as Beswick’s fourth placed side welcome third placed Real Bedford to Farley Way on Saturday.
