REPORT: Alvechurch 3-4 Quorn

By Louis Bosher

The Reds moved back into the playoff places with an impressive victory at Lye Meadows, defeating promotion-chasing Alvechurch in a seven-goal thriller. Zak Goodson returned from a lengthy suspension and opened the scoring inside the first minute with Luke Cox opening his account for the club and Simeon Cobourne rounding off the win with a second-half brace.

As soon as The Reds kicked off, they played extremely well and within a minute of kick-off, Goodson scored a brilliant goal with a fantastic finish inside the box. This was followed by a few chances for both teams including a chance for Alvechurch that hit the post in the 17’ minute.

25 minutes in and worry spreads throughout the pitch as Cain Noble (captain for Quorn) goes down with an injury. Fortunately, he gets back and continues to play. Alvechurch manage to get another chance for goal by Jonny Ngandu from the edge of the box in the 34’ minute, but it is cleared over the bar by Leon Phillips who was debuting as a goalkeeper with Quorn.

Unfortunately for Quorn, Frank Tattum scores from a long ball crossed into the net bringing the score to one all. Quorn attempt to bring the score up with a header onto the bar from Cobourne, but it is unfortunately cleared away. The reds have played well in the first half but would have to be playing a bit more attack to ensure the win for Quorn.

The second half began promisingly as there were a few good chances for Quorn early on. One of these managed to get Cox his first goal for the club. A good cross came in across the box and since Cox was unmarked, he managed to get a great finish, bringing the score to Alvechurch 1-2 Quorn.

Even though the Reds managed to get this early goal, the forward, Kieran Wakefield succeeds in scoring an equaliser for Alvechurch, bringing the score to two all. Alvechurch’s Ngandu nearly gets a goal, but it was just wide of the goal.

72 minutes in and Cobourne pounces on a defensive error, letting him go through on goal and finishing well bringing Quorn up to three goals. Four minutes after this, Cobourne manages to score his second goal of the game with a great finish from the edge of the box. Tope Odabeyi comes on for Wakefield.

In the 79’ minute Kai Fifield debuts for Quorn as he replaces Billy Kee. Tattum almost gets another goal for Alvechurch but luckily for Quorn it bounces off the bar. This is then later followed up by Alvechurch in the 90’ minute when Obadeyi scores a free kick which curls around the wall and into the bottom corner making the score Alvechurch 3-4 Quorn. As the game comes to an end both Goodson and Phillips unfortunately get late yellow cards, both for delaying the restart.

The game at Lye Medow finishes with a win for Quorn bringing them up to fifth place in the league. Bury Town visit the Stotto Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a 3pm kick-off the Reds look for back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since late August.
