HISTORY: Eugene Snee Remembers Len Sutton
Eugene Snee in action for Oadby Town
After our most recent post remembering the history at Quorn Football Club, we received an email from Eugene Snee, a former goalkeeper with our rivals Birstall United and Oadby Town, recounting a story about Quorn legend Len Sutton.
“I always enjoyed playing against Quorn, a good bunch of players, but I knew Len Sutton wasn’t keen on me as I used to mark the centre of the six yard box and a line between the edge of the 18 yard box and penalty spot with a mark in the turf with my studs, just to quickly get my bearings, which didn’t always work! A number of times Len not only got onto me, but reported me to a couple of Referees about the damage to the playing surface.”
”He got his own back the day our new ‘keeper’s shirt clashed with Quorn’s kit and the linesman. During the warm up I was told I had to change. We always had a spare shirt, but not on that day so our kitman asked a Quorn official for the loan of a ‘keepers shirt. Now I can’t be sure of this, but I’m pretty certain Len got involved and sent out a woollen polo neck jumper, the kind used in the 1930s. It wasn’t the most comfortable kit to wear in the height of summer. Touché Len, touché.”
Eugene signed off wishing the Reds all the best, pointing out the progress we’ve made over recent years. Thank you to Eugene for sharing his recollections of playing against Quorn. If you have an stories or memorabilia that you’d like to share, please get in touch.
