REPORT: Redditch United 5-0 Quorn
By Dan Sheward
Quorn’s season came to a difficult end as they fell to a 5-0 defeat against Redditch United, with the opposition proving clinical in both boxes despite plenty of effort and moments from Ryan Beswick’s team.
The game started well for Quorn, with Reece Fyfe testing the Redditch goalkeeper early on. Cutting in from the right-hand side just outside the box, Fyfe hit it well, forcing the keeper into a strong save as he tipped the effort over the bar.
At the other end, Adam Harrison was quickly called into action and produced an excellent one-on-one stop to deny Redditch’s number 20 Robbie Bunn, standing tall to keep the scores level. The same player came close again moments later, his volley taking a deflection and flashing inches wide.
The key turning point came when Deen Master was shown a red card in the 16th minute after handling on the line to prevent Redditch from taking the lead, resulting in a United penalty. Redditch’s Liam Loughlan stepped up and calmly placed the spot kick into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-0.
The home team continued to press and nearly doubled their advantage when Alex Foreshaw rose highest from a corner, only to see his header crash against the crossbar.
Quorn responded well and nearly found a way back into the game through Silvio Bello, who produced a brilliant run from the left, gliding past defenders before seeing his final effort well saved. It was a moment of real quality that deserved more.
Jack Duffy was then left wondering how he hadn’t scored after meeting a drilled Zak Goodson cross, but his effort curled narrowly wide of the target.
Harrison continued to keep Quorn in the contest with another superb fingertip save, diving low to his left to push away a long-range strike. However, from the resulting corner, Redditch’s captain, Alex Cameron was there to turn the ball home and make it 2-0 before half time.
At half-time, Redditch had been the stronger side, but Quorn had created chances of their own and still had hope of getting back into the match. The second half was a far scrappier affair, with clear chances limited.
That third goal did eventually arrive, and it was Robbie Bunn who grabbed it. A well-worked move saw the ball played out wide on the right before a dangerous cross found him in the box, and he calmly slotted home to make it 3-0.
He nearly added another immediately after, but Harrison once again produced a fantastic save to deny him. Redditch’s fourth came in unfortunate fashion for Quorn, with a Loughlan corner curling directly into the net as the home team took full control of the contest.
There was still time for one more blow, as Redditch were awarded a second penalty of the afternoon. Loughlan stepped up once again and converted confidently to complete the scoring at 5-0 and earn himself a hattrick.
It was a tough way for Quorn to finish the campaign, but it should not take away from what has been a fantastic debut season at Step 3. Competing strongly at this level has been a major achievement, and the players can be proud of everything they have accomplished throughout the year.
