REPORT: Quorn 2-1 Corby Town
A late brace from Zak Goodson earned Quorn a preseason win against Corby Town with Tyrone Lewthwaite having handed the visitors the lead shortly after half time.
The Steelman dominated the opening 15 minutes, without really creating any clearcut chances. Quorn went closest to opening the scoring in the 21st minute as Oscar Marshall’s press from the front created confusion in Corby’s defence, earning a shooting chance for Goodson, but Jake Laban was able to tip it around the post.
Emboldened by two goals in two games, Mason Frizelle carried the ball from his own half, carving through Town’s defence, but curling his shot just wide after running almost the full length of the pitch. Marshall again forced an error, earning a shooting chance for himself, but firing narrowly over.
Corby almost stole a goal before the break as a weak back pass was seized upon. The chance fell to Reuben Marshall but Tom Allsopp answered the call and pushed his effort round the post with his only save of note in the match. Goodson came close to breaking the deadlock in the 46th minute, but Laban was equal to the task again, pushing his effort around the post after the forward had cut in off the wing.
The Steelmen did take the lead just a minute later as Quorn failed to clear a free kick. Lewthwaite striking at the second attempt after his initial effort was blocked. Just before the hour mark Ryan Beswick linked up nicely with Goodson, but his effort went inches over the bar this time. The visitors might have been forgiven for thinking that they could hang on for the victory, but Goodson would not be denied, heading a deserved leveller with five minutes to play.
Things got even better for Quorn in stoppage time as Deen Master picked up a clearance in the Corby half, played it through to Simeon Cobourne, who took it wide, dragging defenders with him as he laid the ball back for Goodson to poke it past Laban. The Reds remain undefeated in preseason as they prepare to head over to Shepshed on Tuesday for their next friendly.
