REPORT: Quorn 2-0 Loughborough Students
By James Kendrick
Quorn won the Leicestershire County Cup for just the second time in their history with a 2-0 win against Loughborough Students.
A goal in both halves put Quorn in a commanding position and they never really looked like they’d lose the game.
Winning the cup saw Quorn end their season on a high after an 8th place finish in their first ever season at Step 3.
The teams walked out at Holmes Park for their first meeting in just over 12 months having become quite familiar opponents in recent years.
Loughborough Students were looking to end their streak of County Cup final defeats having lost in the last two while Quorn were looking for their first County Cup victory since 2011.
And it was Quorn who took an early lead a quarter of an hour in. Deen Master was fouled in the penalty area and the referee gave a penalty. Zak Goodson stepped up to take it and sent the goalkeeper to wrong way to make it 1-0.
Good chances were hard to come by for both teams in the first half as they tried to adapt to the bobbly pitch and efforts from Jack Duffy and Cain Noble that went narrowly wide were as close as either team came.
At the interval it felt like the next goal would be crucial in determining the outcome of this cup final and it came just two minutes into the second half.
Quorn swung a corner into the near post and the Loughborough defenders attempted clearance ended up in the back of the net to double Quorn’s advantage.
After the second goal, the game fell into a pattern with most of the play coming in the middle third of the pitch and it never really felt like the outcome of the game was going to change.
And when the referee blew his whistle for full time, Quorn were able to celebrate lifting the trophy with supporters to round off another excellent season for The Methodists.
