REPORT: Quorn 1-0 Lye Town
Quorn finished their season with a routine home win against, already relegated, Lye Town. Oscar Marshall scored the only goal of a match that was reminiscent of a preseason friendly at times, with neither side having much to play for.
Whilst Lye did create a couple of opportunities, they rarely threated Tom Allsopp’s goal as the Reds’ keeper secured his 23rd clean sheet of a phenomenal season. Marshall had the first real chance of the match, played through one-on-one with Ben Newey in the Lye Town goal. The Flyers’ keeper got down well to make a block at the young forward’s feet.
Just before the half hour mark Paddy Webb jinked inside on his left foot and curled a shot onto the post. His effort hit the inside of the post but spun out, falling to Rodrigo Goncalves, who shot wide.
The Reds dominated the second half, but struggled to break down a resolute Lye Town. Jordan Clarke and Zak Goodson, who came off the bench, were constant menaces as was Courey Grantham who spearheaded the attack, but none could provide the finishing touch.
It was Goodson that created the goal though, beating his man on the right hand side of the area and lifting a shot towards the far post. The ball looked to be heading in but Marshall pounced to make sure, driving the ball home, just before the hour mark.
There were further chances for the Reds, but they couldn’t consolidate the lead, settling for a narrow victory. The win sees Quorn finish the title-winning season on 103 points, having lost just once in the league. Other incredible numbers for the Reds include scoring 104 goals, conceding just 25 and amassing 23 cleansheets whilst remaining unbeaten away from home. The club, 101 years old, will now prepare for a first season in step three, with the FA set to announce the divisions in mid-May.
