REPORT: Bromsgrove Sporting 1-5 Quorn

Quorn returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 demolition away to Bromsgrove Sporting. Simeon Cobourne’s brace headlined a scintillating performance as there were also goals for Billy Kee, Luke Cox and Finn O’Boyle on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening in Worcestershire.

There were warning signs of what were to come as early as the second minute. Top-scorer Zak Goodson had the ball in Bromsgrove goal but had been flagged as offside. Quorn continued to apply plenty of pressure with waves of attacks that had the hosts on their heels from the off.

Sporting finally woke up at the quarter hour mark, and matched the Reds for a short spell, meeting Quorn’s flair with rugged physicality. Bromsgrove’s forwards cut frustrated figures up against as they couldn’t find a way through the Methodists backline, marshalled by captain for the night, Mason Frizelle.

Bromsgrove’s resolve quickly dissipated as Quorn reestablished their dominance. Kee and Goodson both had good chances to break the deadlock and Ryan Beswick fired a free kick narrowly over the crossbar. The Reds eventually took a deserved lead as Kee drifted away from his marker in the box and was picked out by Silvio Bello. The veteran striker took a touch, turned and fired past Rory Brown in the 34th minute.

Cobourne doubled the lead before the break when he latched onto a rebound after Brown had made a diving save to deny Goodson. Quorn ‘keeper Adam Harrison, who joined the Reds three weeks ago from Bromsgrove, where he had made 14 appearances, was a virtual spectator in the first half, only called upon for a handful of goal-kicks and a free kick as Beswick’s side returned to their free-flowing best after a stretch of five games without a win.

Sporting rallied after the break, and enjoyed their best spell of the match to that point, forcing a routine save from Harrison and having another opportunity that was sent wide. But it was the visitors that would find the net once again, Cox’s rising highest to convert Frizelle’s assist with a looping header in the 53rd minute.

There was no hint that Quorn were going to take their foot off the gas, and Cobourne completed his brace with a deft curling effort from the edge of the box. Kee had played him in behind as the strike duo rounded off a spectacular night before being withdrawn as part of a quadruple substitution in the 70th minute.

Jaden Charles pulled one back for the Rouslers in the 69th minute. His strike from the edge of the box took a deflection on the way in, and seemed to buoy the hosts who went in search of a way back into the match. Quorn stood firm though and were soon back on top. O’Boyle was desperately unlucky to see his powerful effort come back off the bar after beating a couple of defenders.

The former Wigan Athletic man wouldn’t have to wait much longer for a goal though as debutant Gafar Abari intercepted a pass, strode forward and laid on a perfectly weighted pass. O’Boyle left one defender in his wake, before turning another and finding the bottom corner for Quorn’s fifth.

Austin Samuels almost made it six, but saw his effort clip the bar in the 90th minute as the Reds continued to look for goals. The scoreline flattered the hosts as the Reds ran riot, producing their best attacking performance of the season. The result lifts Quorn back up to sixth in the table, just a point out of the playoff places. Next up for the Methodists is a home match with St. Ives Town on Saturday afternoon.
