The Methodists are finishing off the summer with an FA Cup game, hosting Sherwood Colliery, after suffering a first defeat of the season last time out, in a narrow 0-1 loss against Barwell. This is after a great run of form since the start of the season, going undefeated up until the Bank Holiday derby. Ryan Beswick will hope he can get his side back to winning ways and not let a narrow loss ruin the amazing momentum the club has at this moment.
The Opposition:
Sherwood Colliery go into their game against Quorn after a 2-0 win against Kimberly Miners Welfare. Despite this, Methodist fans could dare to dream as Colliery are currently playing in step five. Sherwood Colliery won the UCL Premier North the season after Quorn won promotion from it. However, the Wood struggled to adapt to life in the NPL East division last season and were immediately relegated back. Currently sitting in second place, Sherwood have bounced back quickly, with just one loss and two draws in the early going this season.
Prior to the 2-0 win at home to Kimberley, Colliery drew 1-1 away to Newark Town. At Debdale Park Sherwood have won four and drawn one, including a 3-1 win against Anstey Nomads in the previous round of the Cup, and a 4-1 triumph over Bugbrooke St. Michaels in the extra-preliminary round, a game in which Luke Morgan was named Man of the Match.
Away from home, apart from the draw at Newark, there have been a 3-2 defeat at Eastwood Community, and a 5-1 thumping of Gresley Rovers on the opening day of the season. That match was part of the UCL Groundhop Weekend and was played in front of a bumper crowd of 597. Former Nottingham Forest and Notts County forward Craig Westcarr scored four of the goals as he returned to the club. The ex-England Under 18 player had previously scored 33 goals in the promotion season of 2022/23.
Head-to-Head:
The last meeting between the two sides took place at Debdale Park in April 2023. The Reds were able to secure a comfortable 0-2 win. Reece Fyfe, Jack Samples & Silvio Bello, who all started in that match, are still with Quorn today, this will give these players confidence going into Saturday’s game. Carter Jo Widdowson, Ewan Robson, Ethan Wiesztort and Jamie York all played for Sherwood in that game and are still at the club.
Previously in the FA Cup in 2019 Sherwood Colliery got the better of Quorn at Farley Way in a narrow 2-1 loss for the Methodists. Jamie York who scored a key goal for Sherwood in that match remains with the club and was named Man of the Match in the previous round win against the Nomads.
Last Game:
Quorn’s last game was an unfortunate 0-1 loss to Barwell. Ryan Beswick and his side can go into their next game with their heads held high however as the Methodists created plenty of chances despite the loss. Barwell midfielder Prince Mancinelli scored the only goal of the game shortly after half time, netting from just on the edge of the box in the 53rd minute. Quorn had chances after the goal, but Barwell’s keeper was up to it, denying the Reds on multiple occasions.
One to Watch:
Quorn need to keep an eye on Jamie York, Club captain for Sherwood Colliery, going into this game, York previously scored against Quorn in the last meeting in the cup. The experienced midfielder has scored in two of his last four appearances for ‘The Wood’, against Newark Town and Eastwood Community. York will hope to put in another good performance against Quorn and lead his club to another cupset.
